Ostara, a very ancient Norse goddess, belonged to the Vanes. Goddess of fertility, life, earth, nature, youth and spring, she appeared every year at the onset of fine weather. Each spring, she emerges from her long winter sleep, when day and night last the same time, and announces the end of winter and the coming of fine weather. She then roams the earth which she fertilizes by making it green and the animals mate. she is associated with hens, chicks and rabbits, animals symbolizing renewal.
