Inseparable brothers, Castor and Pollux are the twins of Leda, wife of Tyndareus, king of Sparta, with whom Zeus fell in love. To seduce her, he changed into a swan. Therefore, the brothers were each born of a different egg, respectively, Castor and Clytemnestra, mortal children, of the egg fertilized by Tyndareus and Pollux and Helen, divine and immortal children, of the egg fertilized by Zeus.

When Castor died, Pollux insisted that he and his brother be reunited in immortality or death. Zeus, moved, yielded at his request and gathered them together in the sky, each bearing on his head a star of the same brilliance.
