The name Arcturus comes from the ancient Greek Arktoûros which means “the guardian of bears” because of its proximity to Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. It was first mentioned by Hesiod. Its heliacal rising, in mid-September, serves as a landmark for the Greeks. Its membership in the constellation of the herdsman illustrates the mixture between Greek mythology (bears and their guardian) and Roman, where the Big Dipper represents a plow pulled by oxen, hence the presence of a herdsman.
