Legend has it that Elizabeth Bathory, the “bloody countess”, a 16th -century Hungarian noblewoman, used to kill young girls and bathe in their blood to preserve her youth and beauty. Her noble origins saved her from trial and execution, but in 1610 she was imprisoned for her crimes in her castle at Cachtice, where she remained until her death.
