The Latin name of the cuckoo flower is Lychnis flos-cuculi. The species owes its name flos-cuculi to its flowering period, when the cuckoo begins to sing. The genus name Lychnis would mean “lamp” because a neighboring species – the garden poppy – was used to make wicks for oil lamps.
