It is in a secluded cave that the Slothful Sleep dwells, far removed from the rays of the sun, in the midst of a thick fog. Not a sound, not a living soul: it is the kingdom of silent rest. At the entrance grows a harvest of poppies and countless soporific herbs: it is their sap that the Night collects to make men and animals sleep on the earth. There, no door squeaking on its hinges, no guard watching the threshold. In the middle of the palace, on an ebony bed lined with thick and large black cushions, the god of sleep rests in the company of his sons the Dreams, stretched around him, more numerous than the ears of wheat in the fields, than the leaves on the trees, than the grains of sand on the beach.
