The traditional name of Theta Scorpii, Sargas, comes from the Sumerian, whose meaning is unknown. The star is sometimes called Girtab, also a Sumerian word simply meaning “the Scorpion”. Theta Scorpii is the southernmost bright star in the constellation, and remains invisible to all observers residing above 50° north latitude.
